I got a golden ticket!

On Friday afternoon we went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Since I am a big fan of pretty much anything Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and/or Johnny Depp do, I wanted to see the first showing, but had to wait a little bit longer.

I thought this movie was one of Burton's best and it was much better than the 1971 Gene Wilder movie (I do like Gene's performance). Everything looked wonderful. The songs used the lyrics from the book and weren't anywhere near as annoying as the original movie. Depp did a good job as the socially inept, oddball Wonka. If you haven't seen it yet, it is worth a trip to the theatre.

Blasphemy! The Gene Wilder one is classic! I quote it on an almost daily basis.

But I really liked this one too (already saw it twice) and loved the Burton spin on the story, especially Wonka's dad.

Yeah, but the orange oompa loompas and those horrid songs they sing? That and the fizzy lifting drink scene make me cringe. Gene Wilder is what makes that one a classic.

I happen to like the orange oompa loompas! But yes, I'm against the fizzy-lifting scene. I was glad to see Charlie having both parents in this movie, and played by some of my favorite actors!

But I love the kids and their parents in the old movie, besides Wilder.

My favorite lines, which make no sense out of context:

Mr. Salt: "Nuts"
Mrs. Teevee: "Rachmaninoff"
Mrs. Gloop: "Save some room for later, Augustus!"
Mr. Beauregard: "Violet, you're turning Violet, Violet!"

Veruca: her song is awesome
Violet: "Can it, you nit!"
Mike TV: his lisp made me laugh
Augustus: I liked watching him grab for that giant lollypop as he drowned

Violet was better in this movie, Mike Teevee was better in the first. The original Charlie just bugged me. He was way too happy for a kid living in a shack down by the river. I was also glad they got rid of the geese and put back the squirrels. I've got to get me some of them trained squirrels.

Wonka: "Everything in this room is eatable. Even I'm eatable. But that, children, is called canabalism and is frowned on in most societies"

"Keep on truckin'!"

"This is the puppet burn ward. It's relatively new"

Hehheheh. Classic lines! I think I'll keep both movies in my collection.

My sister and I always made fun of the old Charlie because he couldn't sing worth a lick. When he and Grandpa Joe sing "I've got a golden ticket," Charlie is flat on several notes.

By the way, I read on CNN that he is a veterinarian specialist for cows or something in a dairy community in the middle of nowhere. He only gives one interview a year: to kids at the local school.
