Mourning

For the past 3 years I have been mourning
-- family, friends, friends family, a job, having kids naturally--

Today while driving home from San Diego I had a random thought pop in my head. "I need to get a box ready to go to Grandma for her birthday and Thanksgiving." Then the tears started to flow. For a moment I had forgotten she was gone (She passed away on May 24th). I will never be sending another birthday box, holiday box or care package to Minot --ever.

Diminishing

My family is evaporating before my eyes. I feel young to have had so much loss, but nothing is promised in this life. I am deeply saddened that I did not get more time on this earth with my loved ones. Less than 1 year after my Grandpa passed and just over 2 years since my Dad, my Grandma went to be with them in the presence of our Lord. I was able to travel back to Minessota to be with family and celebrate the life of my Grandma.

I will always love her and miss her dearly.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

We'll expand on this more later, but we'll be attending both a wedding and a funeral this afternoon. Prayers for all families involved would be appreciated....

Blarg!!!!

So we just got mail from our insurance company saying they need more time to figure out my claim because the jerk still wont call back to explain his side of the accident. I tried calling the number he gave us which is his parents. They have also tried to contact their son but he is dodging their calls. Meanwhile we are out over $1100 because we had to pay the deductible and for the rental car. My blood is boiling. Blarg!

My Weekend = DRAMA

Morgan and I headed down to SD on Friday night. We were on our way to Amy's apartment when while on College a truck that was two lanes over decided to move into our lane (left turn) but his right blinker remained on. I joked to Morgan that we had better stay away from that guy and stayed back an extra half car length so we could see what he was going to do when he turned. We made our way on to Montezuma and he was driving fine but a little slow so I decided to go around him. About a block and a half later while he was in the left lane and we were in the right he decided to make a RIGHT turn and plowed into the side of my car. I was not impressed.

I had barely gotten the car turned off and opened the door when he came running over apologizing. He reeked of alcohol and he just kept saying my buddy told me to turn right so I did (no one was in the car with him), I just wasn't thinking. My tire was hissing, rim is bent, and possibly the axle. Part of the plastic around the wheel was bent up inside the back door. The door seems a bit bent and just a couple of scratches.

This damage was caused by his front bumper hitting the side of my car. My back hurts and I have been to the doctor. I have been given muscle relaxers and have to go back at the end of this week if it is not feeling better. I am just thankful that I was able to steady the car and that it wasn't any worse than it is. We could have easily been spun around and gone into another car parked on the side of the road, or a house or wall that were also right near where this happened.

My car has just been picked up from my moms house and towed to a repair shop that our insurance company deals with. Now I wait to hear from the adjuster and the collision repair shop to see just how bad the damage is...

Read this in the voice of Comic Book Guy. It helps get the point across.

No, no, Mr. Underage Drunk Guy...take our car. We don't want it. It's more important for you to get your party on than for us to drive to work or anything like that. So go ahead...turn down imaginary streets from whatever lane you want. We don't mind. As long as your car can still drive, everything is a-ok.

The One Where I Could Have Died....

Last Thursday night (the 27th) I was driving home from my parents house. I was going down the 605 freeway when I heard what sounded like a backfire behind me. It happened a second time, this time a little closer. I looked around expecting to find some old clunker out there, but they were all newer cars that shouldn't be making sounds like that.

That's when a car came speeding past me. As he was passing, I heard the noise again real loud and saw a small flash from the top of the car's mostly rolled up window. a bad sound came from my car as well. I was trying to figure out what happened, when I watched the car pass another car and a truck up ahead. Both times he passed them, there was another flash and loud pop sound.

I got off at the next exit (the one I wanted anyway), and pulled into a gas station. The headlight was all cracked and pushed in on the side. I'm pretty sure I got shot at! I drove home a little shaken. When I went to work the next day, I found out that a certain widespread gang was having their initiation week. There had been shootings on a couple other freeways as well.

Luckily there wasn't much damage. If I ever decide to become a gangsta, I now have a little street cred. My brother asked if I had at least thrown up my sign (whatever it may be) at them before they got away. I guess I'll have to remember that for next time. For now, I'm just glad that they didn't have good aim.

Sometimes you can't see what's coming...

Yesterday I had a new experience at work. We had a boy who was making death threats towards his new roommate because of racial issues. Then he decided he was going to A: stab and kill the roommate, B: cut his own wrists, or C: throw himself off the roof of the dorm. His staff ended up having to restrain him and take him off to the county hospital to be evaluated.

All of that happened Monday. When I came in on Tuesday morning, I found out he was still in the ER and had tried to run a few times. Another staff and I went to relieve the night staff that were there with him. Right after we got there, they took the three of us into a locked area. There was an area behind a glass wall for the psych doctors and nurses. We were in the main part of the room with about 20 other psych patients waiting to be evaluated. Most had been brought in by the police.

There were a lot bunch of beds and couches in there as well as two locked, padded rooms in the back for anyone who was acting up too much and was a threat to themself or others. During the 5 hours I was there, they had to rotate numerous people in and out of the rooms and the beds.

One lady kept getting off her bed and banging on the nurses station window to yell at them about how she wasn't a patient there and they had to let her go. She couldn't explain why she had a hospital bracelet and gown on. Eventually they had to give her a sedative, so she took a nap on a bed right behind me.

Another woman, who was also legally blind, kept pacing the room and wailing on and off. They brought her a food tray when she said she was hungry. That calmed her down for a bit. She finished everything on the tray, so they took it out for her. I guess she forgot about that because then she started screaming that they were trying to kill her by stealing all her food before she could eat any. She tried to attack someone on a bed she though was hers and when some doctors came out she grabbed someone's juice box and threw OJ all over the room. That earned her a trip to the padded room where she started ramming the window with her head. As they were dealing with that, the first lady had a seizure and flopped out of the bed she was in behind me.

Another guy was sure that everyone there was spying on him, so he went kept confronting people and even pulling the payphone away from other patients who were calling family to yell at whoever was on the other line. A doctor got cussed out for asking a woman what month or year it was and "acting like [she was] an idiot". The woman never was able to give an answer, though she did have plenty to say to everyone in the room at one time or another.

Eventually they got us out of there, and put our kid in his own room where he couldn't escape. I felt really bad for him despite what he put everyone through lately. He had a vacant look in his eyes the whole time although his questions told us he was terrified of the people in there. You could tell by talking to him that something wasn't quite right.

I don't think this will be his last time in room like that.

And no matter what I or any of the other staff do or say, it's sad to think that this is one we can't save. We can tell what the future holds for a lot of these kids, yet often we are powerless to do anything to stop it.

Sometimes you can't see what's coming. Sometimes I think it's best not to know.

I so wish I had heard about these benefit concerts in time to get tickets! I cannot believe I am missing The Man on stage right now, and I am stuck watching from home.

One day...

One day when I was working at Disneyland, an older man came up to me looking very lost. I asked him if he was ok and he said no. He was trying to find his family. They told him to take the tram out to the parking lot and they'd meet him there. There were 3 trams that ran to different parking areas. I talked to him for a bit and we figured out where he needed to be. It happened to be the tram I was going to be driving so I walked him over there and chatted until the tram arrived. We parted ways, and as he said thanks he shook my hand and slipped me a folded piece of paper. I glanced at the front and realized it was a Catholic tract so I just put it in my pocket. A co-worker came up to me and asked about "that old guy" and what he gave me. I pulled out the tract and opened it up to find a card for a free meal at Carl's Jr and a handwritten note....

"Thank you! Best wishes, Carl"

While at the 99¢ store tonight...

Me:  Hey cool!  Can I get a cactus?  They're only 99¢.
Cyndi:  No, you already had a cactus that you killed.
Late 20's woman in store:  You killed a cactus?  Bwhahaha!

Me:  I did ok.  It lived for like a whole year.  At least it wasn't a puppy.

Grandpa Hutchins

I got a call tonight that my Grandpa Hutchins died today. I don't know all the details, but he has been in the hospital all week. He hasn't been himself for a while now so we knew it was coming, just not this soon. The funeral will be sometime later this week, so my dad, brother, and I are making plans to fly back to New York. I had been planning a trip back there for the spring thinking it would probably be the last time I'd see him. Luckily my dad got to see him last month when my parents went back for my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. I have been blessed to have almost made it 31 years old with all 4 of my grandparents still living. Not many people get to say that. Anyway, please keep my family, especially my grandma and dad in your prayers.

R.I.P. Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert

I used to love this show when I was a kid. Too bad I wasn't allowed to try most of his experiments at home.
